His father was a native of Holland, who emigrated to the United States, making his home in Franklin township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.

He was the owner of a farm near Export, Pennsylvania, on which he erected a grist-mill and worked at the blacksmith's trade. He held the rank of major in the state militia. He and his wife were the parents of six children who grew to maturity.
