Bentleyville, Washington Co, PA

He was at one time engaged in the hoop and stave trade in West Virginia, later in farming in Washington County, Pennsylvania, and also in the mercantile business at Prosperity. Early in 1861 he enlisted in the Union army, together with two brothers. He was severely wounded at White Sulphur Springs, Virginia, having received a gunshot wound in the knee, which distorted the joint and left him a cripple. He was rescued from the field of battle by his comrades and was sheltered and cared for by Mrs. Jonathan Arnold, a sister of the famous Confederate chieftain, Stonewall Jackson, for whom he entertained most profound regard. He was a republican in his political allegiance and served as treasurer of Washington county in 1874-75. In 1894 he was elected representative from Washington County to the general assembly and served on the committees on accounts, counties and townships, elections, vice and immorality.
