He born in the "Green Isle of Erin," where he married a countrywoman and reared a family of four sons and three daughters. In 1783 they came to America, finally settling near where is now the village of Claysville, Washington County, Pennsylvania, where he remained a short time, and then moved to South Strabane township, where he later died.

There is some confusion about this family; the source states that he had four sons and gives a list that does not include the name Robert - and then discusses his son Robert. The list of the children of this son Robert is the same as that given for his father.
