He was born at Smethport, McKean County, Pennsylvania, and there he received his education, attending the common school and the high school. In order to perfect himself in the art of photography, he took a technical course at the Oberlin Retouching School. Immediately after finishing this course, he opened a photographic studio at Smethport and became a successful photographer. While this was his principal, it was not his sole business interest, for he had interests outside of Smethport; he was a stockholder in the Smethport Water Company, in the Hamlin Bank and Trust Company and in the First National Bank at Eldred. He was a member of the Smethport Central Club. He was past grand of Smethport Lodge, No. 389, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and was its recording secretary. Beginning in 1902 he was a justice of the peace, and in 1903 tax collector for the borough. His political party was the Republican.
