He remained all his life on the family homestead, and died there.

He purchased two hundred acres of his father's farm and was engaged in farming until his death in . He was a whig, afterwards a repub-lican and served one term as county treasurer. He was a constant reader, a friend of education and a highly respected elder of the Presbyterian church.

Joseph Gault was a farmer in Tyrone township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, where he owned a large tract of land. He was a devout Presbyterian. [HWC 1906 iii, 220]
