General Notes: Husband - George Smith

He settled on his homestead in 1832. A small cabin and a limited clearing had previously been made by a settler or settlers named Hendricks. The land was known as a Holland tract, and was purchased for two dollars and a quarter per acre. Subsequently he bought considerable land for seventy-five cents to one dollar and a half per acre. He erected his first saw mill in 1830. This was destroyed by fire, and its successor was crushed by snow.
