General Notes: Husband - David A. Frampton
He was born in 1837. [HMC 1888, 906]
He was reared in Clarksville, PA, where he was also educated. He early engaged in business, his first venture being transporting of coal and merchandise, running a line of boats upon the Beaver & Erie Canal, in which business he was engaged from 1855 to 1870. He was also extensively engaged at the same time in the lumber business. He was later largely engaged in railroad contracting, and was one of the most extensive farmers of Mercer County, operating some 1,100 acres. He never held any public office, his extensive business and farming operations demanding his entire time. Politically he was an ardent Democrat, and one of Mercer County’s enterprising and successful citizens. His residence in Pymatuning Township was one of the most substantial and elegant in the county. He and his family were members of the Baptist Church of Transfer. [HMC 1888, 903]
His birthplace is the present site of the town of Clarion, Clarion County, PA, which is situated in what was then known as Armstrong County. After being reared in Clarion County to the age of six years, he came with his parents to Mercer County, where he obtained his education. He early engaged in business, his first venture being the transportation of coal and merchandise by boat upon the Beaver and Erie Canal. In this occupation he was engaged from 1855 to 1870, and also during that period he established and developed a large lumber business. The prominent feature of the latter enterprise was founded upon contracts for the furnishing of railroad ties and pilings. During all these years of his business activity he was investing in farm property and also operating much of the land thus purchased. In time he became one of the most extensive farmers and stock raisers of Mercer County, as well as one of the largest lumber manufacturers and dealers in that part of the state. His residence, in Pymatuning Township, became very familiar to the farmers of that section from the fact that for over thirty-two years the Pymatuning Harvest Home was held in Frampton Grove.
