General Notes: Husband - John Kintigh Fox
He was born on his father's farm, situated about one mile west of Mount Pleasant, in East Huntingdon township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and adjoining the farm which he later came to own. He continued to reside at home until he had attained his majority, attending in the meantime the local public schools, and Mount Pleasant Institute. At the age of twenty-one years he secured a position as bookkeeper with the Conestoga Cigar Company of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and after remaining for some time with this concern, went to Pittsburgh, where he resided for two years. There he was employed in a branch office of the same concern, and again in the position of bookkeeper. His elder brother, Benjamin Fox, who was at that time residing on the farm now owned by John Kintigh Fox, died about this time, so that Mr. Fox returned to his native region and became the possessor of the farm. This occurred in the year 1892. This property was the old Captain Paul Warden farm, and on it stood an old brick house, built by Paul Warden in 1839. Mr. Fox's father purchased this property in 1886, it comprising at that time some one hundred and seventy-nine acres. He left one hundred and twenty-seven acres to Benjamin Fox, before mentioned, and it descended from him to John Kintigh Fox. Over time Mr. Fox added other land to his holdings so that he came to own two hundred and two acres in that region, which were divided up into two farms, one of them being one hundred and twenty-seven acres in the home farm and a one-half interest in a one hundred and fifty acre farm which originally belonged to his grandfather, John Fox, on which they were operating the four-foot vein of coal. On the old Warden farm there stood many buildings erected by different members of that family, to which Mr. Fox added largely and doubled their capacity. His barn measured seventy by seventy feet and was a model one, both in plan and equipment. Here he dealt in general farming and raised much stock which he sold for beef in the surrounding markets. His agricultural operations were very successful, but the greatest value which the land possessed was due to the fact that it was underlaid with a nine foot vein of fine coal. This, however, was worked out, having been sold in the past by Mr. James S. Warden, who was the owner of the property.
Mr. Fox held local offices in the community; he was a member of the school board for five years and it was during his incumbency that a high school building was erected in 1895 or 1896. He also occupied the position of tax collector, serving in this capacity from 1906 to 1914. The first three years of this period he was appointed and afterwards held the office by election and collected as much as seventy and even eighty thousand dollars a year. In politics Mr. Fox was a Republican, but was not ambitious to hold public office. He was a very scientific farmer, using all the latest and best methods on his farm and being unsparing in his use of lime and various fertilizers.
