He was educated at Mount Pleasant Institute, University of Rochester, and Johns Hopkins University, after which he was for six years an instructor in Wheaton College. He was then principal for one year of the Scottdale, Pennsylvania, schools, and later conducted a dairy farm at Foxtown.

He took a complete college course and followed the profession of teaching for several years, but was compelled by trouble with his eyes to give it up and devoted himself thereafter to farming and teaming.
