He was born in Ireland, and was brought to America by his father when he was a very young child. He was educated in the common schools near his home, in Cambridge township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, and was a farmer all his life, becoming the owner of a fine farm of two hundred and fifty acres. He was a Democrat in political matters, and a member of the Methodist church.
