General Notes: Husband - Josiah Scott

Josiah and Hugh Scott, brothers and sons of Abram Scott, came to Washington County, Pennsylvania, about 1771, from Peach Bottom, near where the Susquehanna River passes from Pennsylvania into Maryland. Hugh settled in what later became Nottingham township, and Josiah on a piece of land in what was later South Strabane.

He, with his brother Hugh, came from York County, Pennsylvania, to Washington County in 1772. Hugh settled in Nottingham and Josiah in South Strabane, two miles east of Washington, where he owned a large tract of land.

He was a pioneer of Washington County, Pennsylvania. He was a blacksmith - a maker of edge tools, especially of sickles - and was a skillful and rapid reaper, being stout, muscular, and robust. He was of vigorous constitution, plain and simple in manners, habits, and tastes, and noted for his strong common sense and sound judgment. He was for many years an elder in the Presbyterian Church, and was highly respected for his ability and many virtues. His early home was at Peach Bottom, where the Susquehanna river crosses the State line. From thence he removed to the wilds of Washington County, and became a resident of Catfish, now Washington. This change of location occurred in 1773-74. He worked at his trade and at farming till his death.

Among the representatives of this old blood of Washington County, Pennsylvania, may be named Hon. A. W. Scott, of Toledo, Ohio; Rev. W. W. Colmery, D. D., of Oxford, Ohio; Rev. R. C. Colmery, of Sandusky, Ohio; Rev. D. R. Colmery, D. D., of Los Angeles, Cal.; Rev. Alexander Scott, of Denver, Col.; Col. John Scott, of Nevada, Iowa; Prof. E. M. Cotton, of Chester, Iowa; Dr. J. E. Scott, of Chicago, and Hon. Lawson Scott, of Mendota, Ill.; all of whom were great-grandsons of "Old Josiah."

General Notes: Wife - Violet Foster

The source gives the year of her death as 1800, this seems unlikely given other dates associated with the family.
