He resided on the Thomas Hays farm: "Haysville".

He resided in Venango County, PA, until about seventeen years old, acquiring his educa­tion in the district schools. He then came to Fairview Township, Butler County, and found occupation in the oil fields as labor­er. He remained in the oil busi­ness and became known as a successful pro­ducer. His residence in Fairview township covered a period of more than thirty years and he was regarded as one of its substantial citizens.
