He was born in Clinton County, PA, formerly known as Center county. When six years old, his parents came to Cooperstown, Venango County. Here they remained one winter, and came to Plum township. In 1855-56, he traveled through several states and cities of the west, after which he resumed his labors on the farm. In 1862 he invested in the oil business in Oil City, and it proved to be a successful investment, the well which he owned being one of the strongest then known in that region. [HVC 1879, 631]
