The public schools furnished him with his early educational advantages, and he then attended the Westley Academy, at Braddock, Pennsylvania. For a time he followed farming, and at the age of twenty years learned the blacksmith's trade, a calling he followed at Pittsburgh for a period of twenty-seven years, then sold out in May, 1912. He had a place of ten acres in Penn township, on which he had a fine residence erected. Politically he was a Democrat, and he was a member of the Guardians of Liberty. His religious affiliation was with the United Presbyterian church.
