He was born in Scotland and came to Pennsyl­vania in early manhood. He was a stone mason by trade and did a large amount of stone work in Slippery Rock Township, Butler County, where he also acquired a farm. He married after settling in But­ler County. [TCHBC, 1018]

He was born in Ireland and came to the United States in 1833, when thirteen years old, first locating in Lawrence county, PA, where he learned the stone-cutting trade. After attain­ing his majority he settled at Slippery Rock, Butler County, where he married, purchased a farm of sev­enty-five acres, and conducted it in conjunc­tion with working at his trade until his death. He served nine months as a soldier in the Civil war, enlist­ing in 1862 as a member of Company K, 137th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, be­ing honorably discharged in 1863. [HAC 1914, 524]
