He was a Doctor of Divinity in the classic city of Edinburgh, Scotland, and some of his books are still in the possession of his great-grandson Robert R. Forrest.

Two of his sons emigrated, in the early part of the ninteenth century, to America, the one coming to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the other proceeding to a southern port.
