He was one of the earliest settlers in the portion of Mercer County, Pennsylvania, that was cut off in the creation of Lawrence County. The family located there about 1797.
He came to America with three sons and two brothers, Alexander and Thomas, and settled in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in 1788. He later moved to Mercer County. Afterward, Alexander Gilfillan, Jr., his son, went back to Allegheny County, to his uncle Alexander's, and while living there received his education under Dr. Peter Mowry, of Pittsburgh.
