He had a limited education, and at an early age took his father's place at the head of the family. In 1865 he engaged in farming in Worth township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and in 1869 bought the farm of one hundred and ten acres upon which he long resided. He held various township offices and was justice of the peace three years.The family was connected with Center Methodist Episcopal church.
