He was educated at Kiskiminetas School and at Mercersburg Academy, after which he served for a number of years as deputy clerk of courts at Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and in February, 1918, resigned his place and enlisted in the military service of the United States and was stationed at Flint, Michigan.
