He obtained his educational training in the public schools of Washington, Pennsylvania, and the Washington-Jefferson College, from which he graduated in 1900. He then entered the law department of the Western University of Pennsylvania, later known as the University of Pittsburgh, and graduated in law in 1907, and in July of that year, embarked in the practice of law at Washington, where he continued until May, 1908. He then came to Charleroi, and located at No. 511 Fallowfield avenue.

He received his elementary education in the public schools of Washington and then entered Washington and Jefferson College, from which he was graduated in 1900 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. He afterward entered the law department of the University of Pittsburgh, from which he received the degree of Bachelor of Laws in 1907. In that same year he was admitted to the bar of Washington County and located in the county seat, where he practiced his profession for about a year. In 1908 he moved to Charleroi and remained there, enjoying a large and steadily growing legal practice.
Mr. Fergus was active in local affairs after coming to Charleroi and served as president of the municipal council. Fraternally he was a member of Charleroi Lodge No. 615, Free and Accepted Masons; Monessen Chapter No. 280, Royal Arch Masons; McKean Commandery No. 80, Knights Templar; Pittsburgh Consistory; Syria Temple, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, and Charleroi Lodge No. 494, Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. He was also a member of the Nemacolin Country Club of Beallsville and the Kiwanis Club of Charleroi. Politically he was a lifelong supporter of the Republican party and his religious affiliation was with the First Presbyterian church.
