He was reared and educated in his native county, and follow­ed the occupation of farming there until 1854, when he removed to Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and later to Fairview, Butler County, where he continued farming operations, then removed to Callens­burg, Clarion County, where he became the owner of an iron furnace which he operated successfully for a number of years. Later he removed to Bloomfield, Iowa, where he spent the remainder of his days.
