General Notes: Husband - George W. Croushore

He was born March 14, 1844. [BHCWC 1890, 660]

He was of German descent, and was the youngest son of his parents. His father died when he was about four years old, and his opportunity for an education was confined to a short period, most of his time being spent in farm-work. When thirteen years of age his mother abandoned the farm, and he went to live with his brother Henry, with whom he remained one summer, working in a tannery. He then engaged in brick-making, which he followed for three years, and afterwards worked at the mason trade for a like period. In 1861 he purchased a farm and devoted himself to the work of farming and tanning. When a youth he united with the German Reformed Church, and was always a worthy member of the same.

He attended the Brush creek public school and lived with his mother on the farm until about fifteen years of age, when he learned the trade of stonemason, which he followed for three years and then went home and made a large number of bricks for his mother, she at that time owning a brickyard. In 1861 he purchased the interest of Daniel Beck in the steam tannery at Grapeville, and thus became the partner of his brother, Michael Croushore. He then learned the tanning business practically and scientifically and in about three years purchased his brother's interest, after which time he conducted the business himself, except a short period while a Mr. Knappenberger held a fourth interest. For some years he was ticket agent at Grapeville on the P. R. R., but later his son was attending to that business. About 1888 his tannery was burned down, but it was at once rebuilt and made more complete in all its appointments. In his tanning he gave special attention to the preparation of belting material. Having been a life-long working democrat he was in 1885 appointed postmaster under President Cleveland's administration and held the position four years. He never aspired to any elective office, as his time and attention were engrossed with business and private affairs. The denomination of his choice was the Reformed church, in which he was an elder and also served as a deacon. He owned the finest residence in his neighborhood, and besides real estate owned two gas wells in the Grapeville district.
