He received his early education in the local public schools and then went to the Hookstown Academy. He spent the greater part of his life in Hookstown, Pennsylvania, where he followed farming as an occupation and was prominent in the affairs of the community. He was a Republican in politics and always took an active interest in the affairs of his party. He was a member of the United Presbyterian church and served as elder of the church in Hookstown for more than forty years.
