He was born about 1782. [CBRCP-CCJC, 996] But this must be wrong if, as the same source states, his son was born in 1790.

He was a German by birth. [CBRCP-CCJC, 652]

In 1820 he located in Centre County, Pennsylvania, near the present site of Philipsburg, where he cleared a tract of land and established his home.
