He served in the Revolutionary War, and also in the War of 1812, holding the rank of captain. The Maples were of English descent, and were among the pioneer settlers in Ohio, he having been a farmer near Salineville. He was married three times.

Her father was a native of Ireland, and came of an old and distinguished family. His people wanted him to enter the priesthood, but he married young and came to America, eventually settling in the neighborhood of Salineville, Ohio.
