He was born in England and in 1881 he came to the United States. He learned the dye business in his native land and his first position in America was with the Hamilton Manufacturing Company, Lowell, Massachusetts, where he remained ten years. He was then employed in the felt mills at Rahway, New Jersey, for eight months, and following that was employed by the Kent Worsted Mills, Kent, Ohio, as boss dyer and finisher. From Kent he went to Philadelphia with John Beardsley & Sons. He engaged in business for himself at Jamestown, New York, for three years, later conducting a business at New Castle, Pennsylvania. He later worked at Fitchburg, Massachusetts, and Jamestown, New York, where he was boss dyer in the Empire Worsted Mills for four years. At the end of that time he came to Butler, Pennsylvania, and established a plant there which he equipped with all the necessary appliances. He later retired and resided at Niles, California.
