He was born in Lan-caster County, Pennsylvania, and spent his early life in that locality. He was of Irish descent. Coming to Beaver County he there purchased a farm in North Sewickley Township, on which he resided, and was for twenty-eight years engaged in the practice of medicine.
He and his wife were the parents of seven chil-dren.
