The tradition is that this family originally came from Germany, Hesse-Darmstadt and Hesse-Cassel, more likely the former, and emigrated to America during the tide of German emigration between the years 1767 and 1774-75.

He came from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and settled in Southampton township, Franklin County, near the Cumberland County line, where he passed the rest of his days in farming.
