He was reared in his native township and received a common school training, in the meantime working on the home farm. He was always engaged in general farming, raising enough stock for his own use, and was more than ordi­narily successful. He resided on a farm of 158 acres, located about three miles northeast of Portersville, about midway between But­ler and New Castle. In addition to this property, he owned a well improved farm of 200 acres in Worth Township, making a total of 358 acres.
He was a member of Portersville Lodge No. 909, I. O. O. F. In religious attachment, the family was Baptist.
