For five years after leaving college, he was in the wholesale boot and shoe business at Philadelphia, and afterward in the straw goods trade, being very successful in both. He was appointed postmaster at York Sulphur Springs July 1, 1885, by President Cleveland's administration.

He was married at least twice.
