He was a First Lieutenant in the Eighth Pennsylvania Regiment Continental Army, enlisted soldiers of the Revolution, who received appreciation pay for their services (see page 162, Vol. 4, Pennsylvania Archives. 5th Series), commanded by Colonel Aeneas Mackay, and, after his death, by Colonel Daniel Broadhead.

He was born in Virginia from which he migrated in an early day to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he settled in South Huntingdon township. He owned a farm of four hundred acres and was a prominent man in the early history of that township. He was a presbyterian and a democrat and served as justice of the peace for many years.

He was the great-great-grandfather of J. V. Thompson.
