General Notes: Husband - George Gamble
Upon selling his share of the paternal farm to his brothers he removed to Harford, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, in order that his children might have the educational advantages to be found in the academy there. He engaged in the lumber business, then the leading industry of that part of the state, and this led to his coming to the west branch of the Susquehanna in 1846, when he settled at Cherry Tree and continued in the lumber business, operating saw mills and sending lumber down the river in rafts. He was a cultured gentleman of the old school, public spirited and enterprising. He was among the first Abolitionists in the country, and was liberal in contributing to all benevolent purposes. After settling in Indiana county he continued his vigorous opposition to slavery, he and his friend William Achison, also of Cherry Tree, having been, it is said, the first two men in Indiana County to vote the Abolition ticket. He was a fluent public speaker, and made many speeches directed against slavery. He was active in connection with the famous "underground railway," aiding in the escape of many colored people. Gamble's Mills was known as one of the "stations," and it is related that he once entertained over night a party of Southerners in pursuit of slaves who had passed through the day before, and detained them so long the following morning, on various pretexts, that the negroes succeeded in making good their escape to Canada. He was originally a Covenanter, but later a Presbyterian. He, with some other Scotch-Irish immigrants who had settled in that community, organized in 1832 Balibay Covenanter Congregation with Rev. David Scott as pastor, and George Gamble and William Morrow as elders. [HWC 1906 III, 269]
