He enlisted at Keating Furnace, Clarion County, in July, 1862, as sergeant of Company G, 155th P. V. I., for three years or during the war, and was mustered in at Pittsburgh, where the regiment was assigned to the Army of the Potomac. He took part in the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Mine Run, Rappahannock and the Wilderness. The corps to which he belonged opened up the fight at Laurel Hill, and later participated in the engagements at Spottsylvania Court House, North Anna River and Cold Harbor. They then proceeded to Richmond, crossed the James river, and were in the battles in front of Petersburg, which were followed by the Mine Explosion, the Weldon Railroad raid and the battle of Five Forks. He was also in the battle of Preble Farm and in the Apple Jack raid, and after taking part in the Grand Review at Washington, D. C., he was honorably discharged June 15, 1865, at Pittsburgh.
