He was educated at the Jacksonville and Elder's Ridge Academies. He read medicine with Dr. Mabon, of Jacksonville, Pennsylvania, and graduated in 1868 from the Cleveland (Ohio) Medical College. His first location was in Olivet, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. After five years' practice, he then removed to West Lebanon, where he later died.
