He was two years old he was brought by his parents to western Pennsylvania, where they settled. His preliminary education was acquired in the public schools, and when he was sixteen years of age he became one of the first schoolmasters in that region. He afterward was employed as a clerk in a Pittsburgh glass factory, and later held a position in the pioneer dry-goods and notion store of George R. White in Pittsburgh. He married when he was about twenty-eight years of age, and went to live in New Concord, Ohio, where he conducted a general merchandise store for a number of years. About 1848 he returned to Noblestown and there carried on with marked success a general merchandise business. He had the only store in that section of the county, and he numbered among his customers the farmers of Washington, Allegheny and Beaver counties. During his period of store proprietorship at Noblestown he was appointed postmaster. About 1864 he went to Pittsburgh, and was a representative of the Aetna Life Insurance Company until 1867. Again taking up his residence at Noblestown, he reentered the merchandise business and pursued it until 1892, when he retired. He was a devout Presbyterian, an elder of the session and one of the organizers of the church at Noblestown. Among his other gifts he was an excellent penman and an expert mathematician.
