General Notes: Husband - Oliver Phillips Brown

After passing through the public and high schools of New Castle, Pennsylvania, he pursued a course in the Iron City Business College at Pittsburgh. In 1903 he graduated from Washington and Jefferson College with the degree of Bachelor of Science, and in 1908 received the degree of Bachelor of Laws from the Law Department of the University of Pennsylvania. At the earnest desire of his uncle he immediately became associated with the department store of Brown & Hamilton Company. In 1910 Mr. Hamilton retired from the concern and Oliver Phillips Brown succeeded him as president, his brother, Frederick V. Brown, becoming vice-president. Mrs. Rose Phillips Brown was elected treasurer; after the death of Mrs. Brown, Arthur M. Brown became treasurer.
This concern was one of the largest in Lawrence County, and employed an average of one hundred people and kept two delivery trucks in constant action.
Mr. Brown was actively interested in other business institutions of New Castle. He was president of the Community Savings and Loan Company, a director of the Lawrence Savings and Trust Company, and of the Home Trust Company; the Shenango Pottery Company and the Fair Board of the New Castle Agricultural Association. His interest in educational progress is indicated by the fact that he was president of the City School Board. Politically a Republican, in 1920 he represented his district as delegate to the National Republican Convention in Chicago. He was a director of the New Castle Board of Trade, a member of the Field, Lawrence and Masonic clubs and affiliated with several fraternities, among which were: Lodge of the Craft, No. 433, Free and Accepted Masons; New Castle Consistory, Ancient American Scottish Rite; Syria Mosque; Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, of Pittsburgh; of the Masonic fraternity, with other attendant bodies, and the local Lodge, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Mr. Brown also belonged to the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity of Washington and Jefferson College.
