He attended the public schools and was graduated from Butler, Pennsylvania, High School. He worked at various jobs for a time. He was with the W. H. Goehring Company of Butler as a truck driver, and with the Forged Steel Wheel Company for two years, after which he was employed on a farm for two years. In September, 1925, he became manager of the Inn Service Station.
