WILLIAM EXLEY Dec. 22, 1926 - April 4, 1997.
William H. "Bill" Exley, 70, 7279 Pine, Fairview, died Friday, April 4, 1997, at Metro Health Center.
He was born in Fairview on Dec. 22, 1926, son of the late Reginald C. and Clara Merritt Exley. He was a lifelong resident of Fairview and was employed at Ervite Corp. in Millcreek for 44 years until his retirement in 1991. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Philippines, Amphibian Unit, on the USS New Jersey. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and gardener.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Bean, in 1997; and by two brothers, Reginald "Reg" Exley, in 1984, and Dale Exley, in 1981. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Edith "Jean" Foster Exley; six daughters, Linda A. Gisczinski and her husband, Robert, of Girard, Susan Michael and her husband Gerald, of Fairview, Betty Lou Rand and her husband, Mark, of Union City, Patricia F. Smith and her husband, Gene, Edith "Edie" Exley and Carla Rae, all of Fairview; a brother, Robert Exley, of Orlando, Fla., three sisters, Margaret Foster of Fairview, Betty Petri of East Springfield and Hannah "Jane" Ploss of Erie; 14 grandchildren, a great-grandson and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Burton Funeral Home, 7463 Main, Fairview, on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be at the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Joe Billingsley of Union City and Rev. Abe Edwards of Girard officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2115 W. 38th St, Erie, Pa., 165081925; or to the American Heart Association, 5100 Peach, Erie, Pa., 16509.
