He was born in Germany and came to America at an early date, being one of the first settlers in Butler County, Pennsylvania.

He followed farming in his native land and also in America, to which he came in 1849. He was a success­ful man and the owner of a good farm in Winfield Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania.
