He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and after completing his education became a partner in the family wholesale grocery business, the firm W. M. Gormly & Company succeeding A. & T. Gormly Brothers. The business prospered under his guidance, and he continued actively in its management until a few years prior to his death.
He took an active part in recruiting soldiers during the Civil War.
