General Notes: Husband - John S. Fox

He was reared on the farm, receiving his education in the common, schools. He remained at home until attaining his majority, at which time, owing to illness, he gave up farm life and went to Mount Pleasant where he entered a dry goods store. After remaining there one year he journeyed east of the mountains and engaged in the cattle business as an employe. After his return he became superintendent, manager and partner for a mercantile firm at Port Royal, under the name of J. S. Fox & Co., with whom he remained eighteen months. He then took a trip west, after which he returned to his native county and settled on a farm in East Huntingdon township. His estate originally consisted of ninety acres, but he gradually added to the number until he became possessed of no fewer than four hundred. He always took a deep interest in the raising of fruits of all kinds, planting several orchards and for many years made fruit culture a study. Through his efforts many hundreds of fruit trees were planted in the county, and he was foremost in introducing new varieties, not only of fruit, but also of wheat, oats and different vegetables, sending to a distance for seeds at exorbitant prices. In August, 1894, Mr. Fox retired from the farm to his home in Mount Pleasant which he remodeled, making of it not only a modern house but one of the most comfortable and attractive in the borough. His neighbors elected him to the offices of assessor and tax collector. He and his family were members of the Church of God, in which he held the office of trustee. They assisted loyally in building up Centre Bethel Church at Alverton, and later were among the organizers of the church at Mount Pleasant, being among the most liberal contributors to the erection of the edifice.
