General Notes: Husband - Dewald Kieffer
He emigrated to Pennsylvania from Zwei-Brucken, on the Rhine, with his father and two brothers, landing at Philadelphia Sept. 15, 1748. He was raised near Kutztown, in Berks County, Pennsylvania. After the Revolution he removed to Franklin County, and in 1789 purchased from James Clark the tract of land called "Clark's Fancy," where the village of Upper Strasburg later stood. He laid out the town the same year, calling it Strasburg after the famous German city. The village was very prosperous for many years, and until the advent of turnpikes was the most important town in the county. Mr. Kieffer kept a tavern that was a noted resort in its day.
