General Notes: Husband - Solomon Rugh

He was born on a farm two miles northwest of Salem in Clarion County, Pennsylvania. He was educated in the district schools of Salem township, At the inception of the civil war he enlisted for service as a corporal, in Company F, 121st Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, being the first man to enlist in that company. He served continuously from 1861 until the battle of Fredericksburg in 1863-this being the only battle Mr. Rugh participated in, as the war closed before he reached the front again. He was then taken sick and discharged from service on that account. When he had regained his health he was drafted in the spring of 1865, then was assigned to Company H, 56th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, and served until the close of the war.
Receiving his honorable discharge he returned to his home in Clarion County. For a couple of years he farmed on a rented portion of his father's farm and at the time of his marriage he purchased ninety-one acres of that estate. His brother J. Emanuel bought the remainder of the land, on which the old home was located. Mr. Rugh erected new buildings on his portion and continued to farm the land until 1906, when he retired to Salem. For twelve years he ran a dairy, keeping about eleven cows. His farm later comprised seventy-eight acres and he was the owner of a comfortable home in Salem. In politics he was a staunch Republican, and he was for a long time active in township politics. He was school director for three years and for a like period served as road supervisor. His health was poor in his later years, and it was for that reason that he gave up farming.
