His parents were English Quakers.

He was a passenger conductor on the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company's road, Portland, Oregon. His family attended the Presbyterian Church.


Notes: Marriage

Their children:
1. Bessie Haines, born at Springfield, Missouri, January 10th, 1886. She was a graduate of the High School at Fort Scott, Kansas. She married Fred. F. Stauffer September 5th, 1908. He was a teller in the National Bank of Commerce, Kansas City, Missouri.
2. Merrill Haines, born January 12th, 1887, at Springfield, Missouri. He was a graduate of the Fort Scott High School, and became a traveling salesman for a Los Angeles house, covering the territory of Arizona, New Mexico and Mexico.
3. Helen Haines, born March 17th, 1888, at Thayer, Missouri; died July 19th, 1888, at Springfield, Missouri.
4. Ruth Haines, born September 28th, 1891, at Mansfield, Missouri.
