He learned the carpenter's trade with his father, at which he worked many years, and was later a surveyor, following the latter business until his death.
He commanded Company F, One Hundred and Thirty-seventh Pennsylvania Volunteers, in the War of the Rebellion. He was a leading Republican, and served in the legislature in 1865-66.
