He was reared in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and there obtained a good common school education and began life's battle on his own resources when but twelve years of age. He entered the store of his uncle, G. K. Smith, of Mercer, Pennsylvania, with whom he remained several years, and in 1888 went to Grove City to accept a position in a mercantile establishment, where he later became a partner. After about five years he purchased his partner Mr. Smith's interest in the business and conducted it alone for some time, till he sold out. In 1904 he re-purchased the business and had a large trade in dry goods and carpets, etc. He was affiliated with the Republican party. He filled the position of councilman in Grove City and was holding such office at the time the water works system of Grove City was constructed. He was an organizer and the first president of the People's National Bank of Grove City.
