He was born near the line of Butler and Lawrence counties, Pennsylvania. He received a common school education, and learned the carpenter's trade, which he followed in connection with teaching school. In 1862 he purchased a farm of 100 acres, in Concord township, Butler County, which he then improved. In connection with his duties on the farm, he taught school during the greater portion of his residence in Butler County. In 1864 he enlisted in Company B, Sixth Pennsylvania Artillery, and served until the close of the war. Politically, Mr. Emery was a Republican, and always took an active interest in public affairs. He was a member of Concord Presbyterian church, and an elder in that organization. He was also connected with Concord Grange, P. of H.
