He was born at Pine Grove Mills, Centre County, Pennsylvania. He was a graduate of Washington & Jefferson College, and for many years was principal of Pine Grove Academy.
Civil War: He enlisted in Company D, One Hundred and Forty-eighth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, in 1863, served until the close of the war, and was mustered out with the rank of first lieutenant.
