He was born at Paradise Lightner's farm, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He graduated at Kenyon College, Ohio. He was rector of Christ Church, Danville, Pennsylvania, for eighteen years and an orator who wielded great influence over the Federalist Party during the Civil War.

She was born on Wolf Run Farm, Muncy Valley, Pennsylvania.
She gave three years of active service to the Field Hospital Work during the Civil War. She and her mother, Mrs. Ellis, both served as regents of the Danville Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution Society and she and her sister, Mrs. Holstein, were regents of the Society of Colonial Dames.
