He was born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and soon after his marriage moved to a farm in Jefferson township, Fayette County, which was later owned by his son John. Upon this farm the eleven children, five sons and six daughters, of William Steele were born. John was the eighth in number, and was the only son living in 1882.
